A high-strength supplement can look impressive on the label, but the number on the front is only part of the story. Vitamin absorption determines how much of a nutrient your body can actually take in, transport and use. If the form is poorly chosen, the dose clashes with another nutrient, or your digestion is under strain, more milligrams do not automatically mean more benefit.

That is why smart supplementation is not about chasing the biggest dose. It is about choosing nutrients your body can recognise, taking them in a way that suits their biology, and building a consistent routine around real food, sleep and digestion.

What vitamin absorption actually means

Vitamin absorption is the journey from the food or supplement in your hand to the cells that need it. First, a nutrient must be released from its food or capsule. It then needs to survive the digestive process, pass through the intestinal wall, enter the bloodstream or lymphatic system, and reach the tissues where it has a job to do.

At every stage, the outcome can vary. Your age, diet, gut health, medication, stress levels and the nutrient form itself all play a part. Your gut has a major role in absorption

Support your gut with the unglamorous fundamentals: regular meals, adequate fibre, enough fluids, varied plant foods and sufficient sleep. How to get more from your supplements

Next, match the supplement to the goal. Someone with a largely plant-based diet, limited sun exposure, intense training demands or a period of high stress may have different nutritional priorities from someone looking for general daily support.
