Let's talk Curcumin
Emily Shannon
Curcumin is the second of our exciting new products, and we’re so excited to share it with you thanks to it's amazing benefits which go far beyond flavouring your food!
Turmeric is a spice that has received much interest from both the medical and scientific worlds, as well as from the culinary world. Turmeric is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant with a scientific name of ‘Curcuma longa’ and it belongs to the ginger family. Curcuma longa or turmeric has been traditionally used in Asian countries as a medical herb due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic, antimicrobial and anticancer properties. It’s made up of bioactive polyphenolic compounds, collectively known as curcuminoids; which is a mixture of curcumin, demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin.
Studies have linked this powerfully pungent orange spice to the management of oxidative and inflammatory conditions including metabolic syndrome, arthritis, anxiety, and hyperlipidemia. But what makes turmeric so special? It’s the bioactive compound present in turmeric root curcumin, the primary curcuminoid that is found in turmeric, it has to thank for its abundance of health benefits and it’s pigmented orange colour!
Why we love Curcumin
There are so many reasons to love curcumin, so we thought we’d round up some of our favourite reasons, that are most importantly backed by science!
It has powerful anti-inflammatory properties meaning it can help to reduce inflammation within the body
First up! Studies have shown that curcumin can suppress pro-inflammatory signaling by inhibiting certain cells that are responsible for inflammation. Chronic inflammation is at the centre of a number of health conditions. Inflammation in simple terms helps to protect the body, for example when our body is fighting an infection or when we get a cut or bruise. However, inflammation over a prolonged period of time, means that our body is constantly on high alert. This prolonged state of ‘emergency’ can cause a number of health conditions including cancers, diabetes plus conditions like atherosclerosis. Curcumin (alongside a healthy lifestyle) has been shown to fight this inflammation, which can help to reduce the risk of these diseases developing over time.
It’s been shown to boost both memory and cognition!
Curcumin has been shown to increase the brain hormone BDNF, which helps to improve the function of neurons by encouraging their growth as well as strengthening and protecting them. But it doesn’t stop there! Excitingly, studies are currently exploring the possibility that curcumin increases the production of the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the brain, which is known to increase the plasticity of cell membrane in the brain as well as reduce the impact of oxidative damage. Another great reason to supplement Curcumin!
It's a powerful antioxidant meaning that it is a great natural immune booster!
More and more studies are emerging on the benefits of curcumin! One particular study has demonstrated this natural polyphenolic compound also exerts its beneficial effects by modulating different signalling molecules including transcription factors, chemokines, cytokines, which are essential for the functioning of a health immune system!
Why choose our Curcumin
High Potency
When you’re looking to purchase a curcumin product - you should be looking for the level of curcuminoids in each dose, not in the turmeric powder. Why? It’s because, as we’ve said above, it’s the curcuminoids present in curcumin that provide the health benefits. A good quality curcumin product should deliver a high level of curcuminoids PER DOSE, so you get the most benefit! In our new curcumin, you’ll find 210mg active curcuminoids per dose!
Absorbable
When it comes to curcumin , it’s all about absorbability. That’s why, our unique formulation includes curcumin encapsulated in liposomes, known as liposomal curcumin. Liposomes are artificially prepared vesicles made of phospholipid bilayers. Studies have demonstrated that curcumin encapsulation in liposomes significantly improves the stability and bioactivity of curcumin in supplements, which enhances the delivery of nutrients into the cell. With this in mind, we’ve included 100mg liposomal curcumin in our formulation to ensure superior absorbability - want to give it a try? We don’t blame you! Head to the product page here.
Designed with bioavailability in mind
A compound called piperine that is found in black pepper has been shown to help support the absorption of turmeric by up to 20 times! Impressive we know! But how does this work? Well, evidence shows that piperine works by inhibiting an enzyme in our gut. The inhibition of this enzyme stops the metabolic breakdown of turmeric in both the gut and in the liver which helps to boost absorbability!
Last but not least, it’s important to mention that we always make sure that we use the correct part of the plant that delivers those all important bioactive compounds, whatever that plant may be. Turmeric is no different! We’ve been sure to use turmeric root - which is where you find all of the active curcuminoids. That’s why you’ll find that each daily dose of our curcumin is made up of over 10 grams of turmeric root with an extract ratio of 15:1 so you can be sure that you’re getting the highest quality curcumin!
