Multi Plus… Deconstructed: Let’s talk vitamins

MARVELLOUS MULTI PLUS
Multis are everywhere, often seen as the one stop shop to support us and give us that little extra boost that we often don’t get from our diet alone. It's the all-year-rounder, something that we’re seeing more and more people reaching for. Two questions we often get asked are; are all multi’s created equally; what vitamins and minerals should we look for in a multi?
Here at Link we want to break the mould, get down to the nitty gritty and deconstruct our Multi so you know exactly what you’re getting.
So, let’s talk about our Multi Plus. Our unique Multi Plus Complex is suitable for men and women of all ages and has been designed specifically to support busy lifestyles, helping you face the demands of modern life, whilst feeling your best. But, it doesn’t stop there! Here at Link we have an edge… we like to call it the Food Based difference. Each of the Food Based vitamins and minerals (yes all 25 of them!) occur in a food matrix along side a load of other goodness, such as naturally occurring fats, carbohydrates and enzymes, just as you would find in real food.
Multivitamins and minerals can be a mind field, with so much information on the label, it can be hard to know what to look for and perhaps more importantly, why our body needs it all. So to make it easier, we’re breaking it down and doing the leg work for you, separating both the vitamins and minerals that we use! So, let’s start with the vitamins...
WHAT ARE VITAMINS
Vitamins are molecules that are required by our body in order to carry out essential cellular processes. We aren’t able to synthesize most vitamins within our body itself, so this means that we need to make sure we’re getting the majority of them from our diet. Vitamins have a vast array of functions within our body but two of the biggies include their ability to act as antioxidants and co-factors in enzymatic reactions.
LINK’S MULTI PLUS: VITAMINS
Vitamin D is a precursor to a hormone that is involved in calcium homeostasis, which means that it is essential for our bone health. Sunlight is the primary source of vitamin D for most of us, as well as including vitamin D rich foods, such as oily fish and eggs (make sure you eat the yolks too)! Supplementation is advised for both adults and children in the UK particularly in the winter months.
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that acts as an antioxidant, this means that it helps to protect our cells from oxidative damage from free radicals. As vitamin E is fat-soluble, it can be found in a wide variety of polyunsaturated fatty acids, for example nuts and seeds. Food based vitamin E to retained very well within our body, which is good news if you’re already taking our Multi Plus!
Our body requires vitamin K for the synthesis of several proteins that ensure healthy blood clotting. Impressively, vitamin K is synthesised by bacteria in our gut (in the large bowel to be precise), aren’t our bodies amazing?!
Beta carotene is a carotenoid which our body can convert into vitamin A. Its essential for a number of vital processes within our body, namely as part of our immune defence, by ensuring the healthy development of mucosal membranes. It’s also essential for our vision and healthy skin. It gets better though, our food based form of beta carotene is highly bioavailable and very efficiently converted into vitamin A that we require, and is obtained by carrot concentrate, cool huh?
Vitamin C is essential for our immunity, antioxidant powers and also helps the absorption of iron within the gut. Link’s food based vitamin C also contains naturally occurring bioflavonoids which help to fight inflammation, this also helps to ensure that food based vitamin C is readily used by our cells meaning there is no need for large megadosing.
Link’s Multi Plus contains all of the essential B vitamins. All the B vitamins play an essential role in the maintenance of our health, and in our opinion have a whole host of super powers (we have a whole blog on why we love the B’s, click here to have a read)! To keep it brief, the B vitamins are essential to help the regulation of our metabolism, hormone production and even DNA production, the list could go on, seriously!
In our Multi, we’ve made it easy for you and popped all of the B’s in one place alongside all of the other essential vitamins that our body requires to perform at its best.
Here is a quick checklist of the B’s that we use in our Multi:
If you want to find out more about the B vitamins individually then head over the The British Nutrition Foundation.
